Crafting Real Characters in Memoir or Novel: A Workshop

Date: Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019

Time: 9:30 a.m.— noon

Get a head start on your work-in-progress novel or memoir by joining us for this workshop, focusing on how to develop real characters.

How do you go about crafting a character who is complex and compelling? From Jay Gatsby to Madame Bovary to Cheryl Strayed's portrait of herself in Wild, certain characters remain indelible for readers. Why? Because they are human. They are real.

Whether you are writing a memoir or a novel, you don’t want your characters wooden, one-dimensional—or worse—not believable. Specific techniques will be discussed, using examples from novels and memoirs to illustrate how writers take what they know about people and translate it to the written page. Time for writing and working on our characters, coupled with reading our work in the Circle, is part of this workshop.

Women's Writing Circle workshops offer ways to stimulate narrative and storytelling through instruction and discussion. The goal is to bring together a community of dedicated writers and provide inspiration and new writing by focusing on the craft and alchemy of writing.

Taught by Susan G. Weidener. Susan is author of Again in a Heartbeat, a memoir about being widowed at a young age and a Story Circle Network selection as one of the best memoirs of 2011. Its sequel, Morning at Wellington Square, a woman’s search for passion and renewal in middle age has received critical acclaim from readers and authors, as has her novel, A Portrait of Love and Honor. A former staff writer with The Philadelphia Inquirer, Susan started the Women’s Writing Circle as a place for women to share their voices and their stories.
